Perils of Pesticide Free Gardening

Yeah, I spent 2 hours outside this morning picking lettuce, chard, and spinach. I collected 25 snails and three of those i found after i washed said produce :). I guess you gotta be willing to pick off a few critters (and feed 'em to the chickens). I'm also assuming this means that this will be the first year I'll fight the War of the Snails. last year it was the War of the Squash Bugs, and the year before that was the War of the Aphids. Before that, there were no wars - just a steady battle with the weeds and gravel while ed & I made the backyard into the garden it is now. I guess it took the pests a few years to figure out that the Land of Desolation is becoming the Land of Bountiful. dang.

  1. Please, tell how you fought the aphids.

  2. We sprayed as many as we could off the trees with a lot of high pressure water. we scraped off some more. we bought ladybugs (they ate a few aphids and then flew away for greener gardens). all in all, we lost a few clusters of fruit and leaves in the orchard - but we haven't had another infestation. just a few random clumps now and again.

  3. You can spray them with Simply Green soap to kill them too - my Daddy taught me that :)

  4. By the way, that was referring to the aphids, not the snails :)
